A one-day workshop offered by the
Okanagan Summer School of the Arts
With Pepita Ferrari, the director of
Capturing Reality: the Art of Documentary

“The part I like about documentary is that it can be anything. The part I don't like about it is you're constantly being told documentary has to be one thing, rather than a whole multiple of possible things.”

- Errol Morris
director of The Thin Blue Line, Fog of War and Standard Operating Procedures

In 2007-2008 Pepita Ferrari, Canadian independent documentary director and producer of eighteen years, interviewed over 30 internationally known documentary directors for the National Film Board of Canada’s feature documentary Capturing Reality: the Art of Documentary. Carrying out intensive interviews with not only Errol Morris, but other names like Werner Herzog (Little Deiter Needs to Fly, Lessons of Darkness), Nettie Wild (Fix: an Addicted City, A Place Called Chiapas), Nick Broomfield (Biggie & Tupac, Battle for Haditha), Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September, Touching the Void), Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes, Act of God), Velcrow Ripper (Scared Sacred, Fierce Light), Albert Maysles (Salesman, Grey Gardens) and Kim Longinotto (Hold Me Tight Let Me Go, Rough Aunties) she explored how each of them created their documentaries.

“Looking in detail at each of these director’s works and then discussing it with them was an incredibly exciting experience,” says Ferrari, “because unlike fiction films, there are no formulas. We’ve reached a point where documentary can be whatever you want it to be and where anyone with a good idea can make one.”

This one-day workshop offers both the non-filmmaker and the filmmaker alike a chance to take a look at the wide variety of styles and approaches being used today in documentary. Throughout the day you will screen an exciting selection of excerpts and trailers and learn about the different types of documentary. Find out more about what goes on behind the scenes as Ferrari shares her insights on the ground-breaking work of Errol Morris and Albert Maysles, the issue-driven work of Michael Moore and the docu-fiction of Kevin Macdonald in addition to many others.

If you love documentaries and simply want to know more about them, or if you’re already involved in making documentary, this is an eye-opening experience not to be missed.
